June conditions vary significantly with snow risk at elevation - organizers faced "6 feet of snow covered the course at its high point" requiring last-minute route changes in 2023. Strict cutoff times accommodate weather variability, with final finish deadline at 5:30 p.m. High altitude means weather can shift quickly despite generally favorable June timing. Gypsum Sports Complex provides solid infrastructure with onsite camping and showers through town support. Eric Brunner won in 2024 after placing fourth and second in previous years, showing consistent event execution. But riders print their own maps for the 85-mile route, and cutoff times are strictly enforced - 11 a.m. At mile 28, final finish by 5:30 p.m. "Thanks to their support, we are able to offer onsite camping, complete with showers and bathrooms."[4]

White River National Forest permits provide access to terrain from "11,000-ft high alpine forest to sandy, scrubby rolling hills." The payoff: "you're cruising along, you see wildflowers, moose. You get the harshness out of the way early and then you get to just settle in." Course includes osprey attacking bald eagles over fish.[8]

Growing rapidly from 289 riders in 2022 to over 500 in 2024, with 2025 elite women's field including Unbound winners Karolina Migon and Lauren Stephens plus Olympian Erin Huck. "world class course," but it functions primarily as preparation for summer marquee races rather than a destination event itself.[13]

If you're in Colorado or the Front Range and want a mountain gravel challenge—yes, it's a well-organized event with genuine altitude and climbing. If you're traveling from far away—there are more prestigious mountain events elsewhere.
