RIDERS REPORT
Coline
The notorious climb up Coline peaking at 12,500 ft is mentioned as a key feature riders must endure.
Altitude performance
Racing at 3200 to 3,800 m or 10,000 to 12,000 ft creates massive drops in power and presents problems with acclamation, pacing, and race nutrition that are different than sea level racing.
It's more of a dirt road race done on mountain bikes rather than traditional mountain biking terrain.

From the Field

As I made the turnaround at the top of Coline, something happened that has never happened in my life before.

I want to tell you it's going to hurt out there, it's going to hurt real bad but when it does you just keep digging deep and say to yourself one thing - let Bill, let Bill, anything more is not necessary, anything less is not enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

August conditions in Colorado Rockies mean starting pre-dawn cold and finishing in afternoon heat, with weather that can turn fast. Rachel Hwang experienced this firsthand: "On that climb, it started hailing on us. I hate rain. I'm like a cat, but in those few miles, I soaked it all in – specifically in my legs. It drastically helped with the cramping."[1]

Getting into Leadville requires winning December's lottery among 5,000+ applicants for roughly 1,600 spots, with $575 auto-charged upon selection. The traffic reality: "It may sound like an excuse, but this traffic jam is the harsh reality of starting in the white corral." The white corral alone "was subdivided into three self-organized waves and represented almost ⅓ of the racers."[12]

This is the race that made ultra-endurance cycling mainstream, where finishing earns a coveted belt buckle and lifetime bragging rights. Victoria Weeks captures the deeper meaning: "This race signifies more than a mythical cycling event or physical challenge. The aspiration to finish in twelve hours, to earn the small belt buckle and the finisher's medal, isn't driven by bragging."[4]

The most famous mountain bike race in America, where the belt buckle represents cycling's ultimate endurance achievement. Rachel Hwang's goal exemplifies the prestige: "My goal was to get under 9hrs for a large belt buckle," showing how the sub-9 hour big buckle represents elite-level accomplishment that drives competitors from around the world to this Colorado mining town.[17]

Yes—if you're serious about endurance riding and willing to commit to proper altitude preparation. No—if you can't take time to acclimatize or haven't trained specifically for high-altitude suffering.
