RIDERS REPORT
The Boneyard MI 40
Legitimately like rock crawling for 20 minutes. This section destroys your back and legs, breaks bikes into bits, and features sharp rocks that cause punctures.
Sharp rocks throughout the course cause punctures. Extremely dusty conditions with 500-600 riders - dust gets so bad that chains run dry around 40 miles in and sound horrendous.

From the Field

There's a section they called the boneyard - it was legitimately like rock crawling for 20 minutes and all we did was just cooked your back, destroyed the legs.

I think there were five hundred and something 600 people and the dust was ridiculous - my chain ran dry like 40 miles into the 60 miles, sounded horrendous.

I have not ridden them yet I think I might score a pair and pick him up at the shop the saw to 38 seems quite intriguing to me I think it's got a nice good profile high volume is key

RIDERS REPORT
High volume tires are key. Riders were running various tire widths including 38mm and 42mm options. The dusty conditions cause chains to run dry, so extra chain lubrication is important for long dusty rides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Historical weather data shows average highs of 75°F and lows of 46°F, with a 22% chance of rain on any given day. May 2018 Dirt Fondo delivered "a spectacular early spring day, big blue sky, and dry, with no wind" with ideal conditions where the famous white dust "didn't really kick up very much." November road edition featured complementary "autumn weather" with "low autumn light and shadows" creating challenging descent visibility. High Sierra Nevada timing targets post-snowmelt but mountain weather variability remains. Similar climate challenges to SBT GRVL.[5]

Four-day festival format brings "free and secured bike parking, kids zone, sponsors & local vendor booths" with traffic-controlled intersections and moto officials. SAG support documented with van assistance, plus 4-5 feed stations with mechanical and medical teams on course. Truckee Chamber of Commerce provides official support, though specific packet pickup and airport details remain unspecified.[1]

Routes explore dirt roads past Prosser Creek Reservoir, Boca Reservoir, and Stampede Reservoir with single track creek crossings on the Boneyard route. The course ventures "into the hills north of the city" accessing Sierra Nevada backcountry terrain. However, the event positions itself as "a good introduction to gravel grinding surrounding Truckee," limiting the expedition-level exploration that defines peak adventure experiences.[1]

Peter Sagan's presence brings star power, performing wheelies across finish lines and mingling with 600+ participants for photos. Elite field includes Geoff Kabush, Levi Leipheimer, and Bora-Hansgrohe teammates like Daniel Oss and Maciej Bodnar. Kabush's post-race tweet claimed victory over "the world champ" by 45 minutes, though the event maintains recreational rather than elite competitive focus.[3]

If you're in California or visiting Tahoe—yes, it's a solid event with spectacular terrain. If you're from out of state—consider the costs and regional field.
