A ~100-mile test through the Kansas Flint Hills. The exact route is redrawn most years (Life Time has combined and reshuffled 'north'/'south' course features in recent editions), but the character holds: it leaves Emporia through Wabaunsee and Morris Counties, passes a checkpoint at Council Grove (a stable landmark, historically ~mile 50), and shares its brutal flint rock roads, rolling terrain, and open-prairie exposure with the 200—just compressed into a faster, more intense package.

North Course

The North Course is punchier and chunkier. It's a beast. It's chunky like the gravel. It's just like these massive rocks.

Heat Management

Unbound is usually extremely hot and that will wreak havoc on your power late into the race. That is kind of the critical moment where people either completely crack and fall back to 80th place, 100th place, or break into that top 20 or top 10.

There are rocks flying everywhere. There are crashes happening. It's just a beatdown. To race 200 miles on this terrain is just so destructive.

The conditions are completely unexpected. It's so different to everything we do. There's a lot of different sections to approach. Some are famous for being really fast. Some are famous for people notoriously having punctures non-stop and some are just famous for being real tough, gritty sections.

As such, the gearing on this bike is something that people would be more familiar with on a road bike. 1134 to Dura Ace cassette and then up front we have a 3450 to Dura Ace power meter chain set. Shimano's GRX 12speed Di2 levers and rear derailleur complemented with some Dura Ace road components to help optimize my bike for the crazy high speeds of the Pro Race.

My chain is waxed with Silka's Endurance chip wax.

Your whole training has to change your mentality definitely has to change. There's so many factors that are going into play here. It's just knowing that you're prepared and able to deal with that and don't give up.

It is really hard to focus for 10 and 1/2 hours. Perfect world scenarios don't exist in Unbound.
