Mix of smooth gravel forest roads (70%), paved sections (20%), and technical doubletrack (10%), including a ~5-mile especially rough, rocky two-track section with a likely stream crossing (organizer course notes). Smoother than mountain gravel but never flat.
Signature challenge: Steep, scenic climb with Lake Superior views. Pack may still be together here—surges happen.
You finish with a view of Lake Superior, couldn't find a better finish in gravel racing. The first six seven-ish miles all gradual uphill and then you hit fast gravel which is about 20% wake up call for any of you in Iowa.

The scenery the trees the gravel was fast there was a nice B section that was pretty chunky but definitely manageable. There were guys that were doing fat bikes, single speed fat bikes for that matter.

There's moose and wolf sign if you're paying attention and lucky, plus great views of Lake Superior. It's such an awesome place to hang out in Grand Marais and shop and eat and hang up at the lake

Historical weather data shows average highs of 57°F and lows of 43°F, with a 40% chance of rain on any given day, and gusts reaching 28 mph. Late May conditions vary dramatically year to year. Mathew Wollmann raced in persistent rain and fog: "The rain had not let up. In fact, I think it had gotten worse... It was VERY foggy and hard to see very far in front of me." Mike Ward got perfect conditions: "Light enough winds, not too hot, bright sun all day. Perfect." Temperature ranges from low 50s to mid-60s with Lake Superior creating unpredictable weather patterns. Similar climate challenges to SBT GRVL.[1]
Duluth airport is 2 hours away, Minneapolis is 4+ hours—getting to Grand Marais takes planning. Mike Ward broke his chain the night before and had to rebuild his drivetrain with questionable results: "By the time I loaded my bike onto Ryan's vehicle, I really had no idea what would happen tomorrow, mechanical-wise." Course details weren't released until 6 days before, extending from 20 to 26 miles without advance notice.[2]
The route travels through remote Boundary Waters country and along Devil's Track Lake. Jamison describes one highlight: "Riding along the most beautiful gravel road along a moraine that you will find. Amazing pine forests with small lakes dotting the landscape as you roll along the gentle ridge line." Mile 22 reaches Eagle Mountain trailhead, Minnesota's highest point, creating expedition-style racing through true wilderness terrain.[1]
Large-field status (2,000+ riders) draws a competitive Midwest field to the North Shore. Mathew Wollmann raced elite-level tactics: "I found myself in the 400 - 500 watt range rather quickly... Follow the leader, hang on, passing on the left type of racing" with 12 riders in the lead group. This is not a UCI Gravel World Series event (organizer's own event page makes no such claim, and it doesn't appear on the current UCI calendar) — prestige here comes from field size and course scenery, not UCI points.[14]
You need the fitness for 110 miles and 6,000 feet—that's six hours minimum of rolling punishment through forest roads. The course isn't technically brutal, but it's relentlessly rolling, and those doubletrack sections at mile 80 will test your focus when you're cooked. If you can't handle pack racing with 2,000 riders or the possibility of 45-degree rain, stay home.
