RIDERS REPORT
Mountain climbs
Riders describe riding up and down mountains in the country roads section after crossing the bridge.
Rain route conditions
The Department of Forestry can shut down off-road sections due to weather, forcing the race onto an all-gravel rain route instead of the normal mountain bike course.
The race features really fast fun single track sections in the normal route, but can be converted to all gravel when conditions force the rain route.
Course includes riding asphalt for quite a while at the start, then country roads with mountain climbs and descents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Historical weather data shows average highs of 79°F and lows of 62°F, with a 47% chance of rain on any given day. Mid-September in Georgia's mountains brings unpredictable conditions. Rain route protocols exist due to wet weather concerns—used twice since 2014 including 2022 and 2024. No specific weather data available for Dahlonega timing, but the required alternate course suggests regular weather disruptions. More weather exposure than Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego.[1]

Montaluce Winery provides civilized start/finish infrastructure with boxed lunches from Moe's and free primitive camping. Registration closes September 8th with no race-day registration and Friday-only communication windows. Perry and Kristi Jewett earn rider praise for organization, with Michael Leach noting their "four-minute promotional video" as "the best promo video of any of our regional gravel events."[1]

Course mixes "fast gravel descent" with singletrack through Turner Creek Trail and Bull Mountain systems. Multiuse trail warnings require yielding to horses and hikers, with specific dismount protocols for equestrian encounters. Wine country setting at Montaluce adds post-race exploration beyond typical gravel road grinding.[3]

Marketed as mountain bike race by Mountain Goat Adventures, not positioned in gravel elite circles. Michael Leach describes switching distances as a "downgrade," suggesting the event attracts serious regional riders but remains outside national gravel conversation. Capped field size keeps it local-focused.[2]

If you're in Georgia and want a local mountain gravel event—yes, it's a solid regional race. If you're from out of state—there are better options.
