Driftless Region 'champagne gravel' with punchy blufftop climbs. The terrain looks Midwestern-gentle but delivers relentless 10-15% gradients throughout. Apple orchards, gravel quarries, and river valley views provide scenery between efforts.

Signature challenge: Nine mile-long climbs spread through the body of the race, then a signature finishing circuit -- Chicken Ridge, an apple orchard, and a working gravel quarry -- before the final 1-mile, 8%-average kicker with roughly 4 miles still to go.

The Nine Climbs
Per race organizers, the 110mi course carries nine distinct climbs, each roughly a mile long and ~500ft, scattered through the body of the race rather than concentrated in one place -- death by a thousand cuts rather than one big effort.

You definitely need to pre-ride the course. You need to know the corners. You need to know where you're going. It's almost like a mountain bike race. It's so windy. It's so tight. It's hilly.

Make sure you have your Garmin like zoomed in. If it looks like a sharp turn on your Garmin or Wahoo, it's going to be sharp.
I don't think aeroing out is probably the best thing to do for this course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Historical weather data shows average highs of 81°F and lows of 58°F, with a 24% chance of rain on any given day, and gusts reaching 26 mph. September in Minnesota means 50-degree mornings that climb to 70s if you're lucky, or sideways rain that turns 'champagne gravel' into slick misery. The 2025 edition had muddy sections that caught riders off guard despite the usually smooth surface conditions. You'll start in arm warmers and finish in shorts, assuming the weather doesn't decide to punish everyone equally. More weather exposure than Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego.[14]

La Crescent is a 315-person town hosting 42 categories of national championship racers—the math doesn't add up for seamless operations. The venue bounces between Nebraska and Minnesota every two years, so local knowledge resets constantly. On the plus side, USA Cycling runs the show with actual organizational competence, and the Apple Festival timing gives you somewhere to eat afterward.[10]

Racing for Stars and Stripes on courses that change dramatically between Nebraska's Oregon Trail country and Minnesota's limestone bluffs keeps things interesting. The venue rotation means you can't just dial in the same strategy year after year. It's a national championship with real consequences and UCI Worlds qualification, but the relatively new event lacks the deep mythology of established classics.[12]

This is THE national championship. The stars-and-stripes jersey means something. Winners get automatic UCI Gravel Worlds qualification. For American gravel racers, this is the domestic title that matters. "Ten minutes into the USA Gravel National Championships, I watched Chase Wark attack up the left side of a Minnesota highway."[8]

Yes if you want a legitimate national championship jersey and Worlds qualification. Yes if you appreciate accessible championship racing. Skip if you want destination adventure over competitive credentialing.
