Facts & History

James Olsen created the route in 2015 for a bike testing trip. The first rally event ran in 2016, inspired by the Tour Divide's free, unregulated ethos promoting good ethics. Olsen met Martijn Schildkamp (Smart Shelter Foundation founder) in Nepal in 2008 while building a wind-break bivvy spot at Annapurna base camp - this connection led to TNR's charity partnership. Founded in 2015. By James Olsen.

Reputation: One of the original European bikepacking events. Legendary status in the community. Where Tour Divide ethos meets Alpine adventure.

2016: First official rally event
2021: Historic Women's TNR led by Lael Wilcox - first women's-only bikepacking event in Europe
2018-2024: Provided ~60% of Smart Shelter Foundation's annual budget through patches and sponsorships
2024: No official event - riders rode independently while organizers addressed insurance

RIDERS REPORT
Colombardo Climb
The biggest climb many riders have ever done. Eight hours including stops from the approach to reaching over 2000m. Broken tarmac becomes loose gravel, then gets steeper like riding up a wall. Many riders walk large portions due to the length and high altitude.
Col de la Finestra
Another major climb following the Colombardo. Riders describe it as a big one but hopefully easier than the Colombardo.
Death Road
A closed road known as the death road due to risk of rockfall that is reclaiming it for nature.
50% gravel with parts that are not gravel anymore but big rocks and technical terrain. Broken tarmac becomes loose gravel on climbs.
Technical descents that are really fast, requiring full concentration and focus.

From the Field

So, we're only about 500 meters from the top of the Caldell Colombardo. It has been a huge climb. Biggest climb we've ever done. And we've been walking quite a large amount of it is just such a long climb. You're so tired.

Keith & Lindsay - Bikepacking Scotland · 6.4K views

The rally itself it's 700 km with about 18,000 M of climbing 50% of that on gravel and in parts really it's not more gravel anymore it's like big rocks and things so it's technical.

After the dead straight approach to the mountains the colombardo is a brute broken tarmac becomes loose gravel to the 1800 meter cull then the TNR goes higher still. It's like riding up a wall.

This wasn't a race it was a rally and it was just about riding those 700 km. Didn't ride that many hours, somewhere between 10 and the longest day was maybe 14 hours. Got quite a bit of sleep, mostly 6 to 8 hours depending on how long the day was and how cold it was in the morning.

RIDERS REPORT
Eat a lot more than your hunger tells you to eat. Bring power bars and stop at small restaurants and bars everywhere you can find them.
Keep moving and eat roadside snacks quickly, then move on. Don't stop pedaling really, just keep turning pedals to get through the distance and elevation.
Consider taking more days if doing it again - maybe 10 days instead of 4-5 to ride less each day and enjoy the scenery more.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Italy was experiencing a late summer heat wave with temperatures well above 30 degrees centigrade" during his 2024 ride. Valley heat creates serious dehydration risk at altitude, while high passes bring sudden weather changes. Josh encountered afternoon storms: "The temperatures in the Valley were high, but in the mountains above me I could see the clouds building ominously."[13]

Josh Ibbett warns "Don't underestimate the Colle Del Colombardo, its tough and slow going, but the good news is that most climbs feel easier from here on in." Self-supported cross-border journey from Turin to Nice requires international travel planning. Italian villages provide reliable water tap network, though Josh discovered "Tailfin frame bags are waterproof as long as the zip is shut… if its left open they are also excellent at collecting water."[6]

Sophie Gateau describes accessing Little Peru as "the most epic moment of our expedition" where her team spent "four hours, we push our bikes for most of it. We are overtaken by hikers armed with trekking poles." The cross-border journey through remote military roads and refugio culture defines European bikepacking adventure. "the first person I spoke to was here for his second year, and when I asked what the first climb was like he smashed his fist into his palm."[5]

Founded in 2015 and holding legendary status among European bikepacking events, TNR attracted 180 riders to its 2024 gathering in Turin's Piazza Giambattista Bodoni. The Sunday night social dinner creates "a chance to meet fellow riders and fill up on pasta or pizza before the start." Lael Wilcox's organization of the historic 2021 Women's TNR established it as the first women's-only bikepacking event in Europe.[12]

Yes if you want authentic bikepacking adventure without commercial racing pressure. Yes if you appreciate community, charity, and soul over competition. Yes if you're prepared for multi-day Alpine self-sufficiency. Skip if you need race infrastructure and support. Skip if rocky military roads will destroy your pure gravel setup.
