The official 111-kilometer race starts and finishes in Garries Park, climbs 1,761 meters, and spends more than 80 percent of the day on gravel through Galloway Forest Park.[2]
Course Profile
Editorial verdict
Sixty-nine miles sounds manageable until Galloway adds 5,778 feet, rough forest gravel, and a race-day cutoff.[12]
The Gralloch grew into Scotland's gravel festival around a competitive race in Gatehouse of Fleet, later adding a sportive and a separate 323-kilometer Ultra. By RED:ON Sports.
Reputation: Britain's flagship competitive gravel race and a qualification pathway to the UCI Gravel World Championships.
2027: Three-day festival scheduled for May 14-16
2027: Race retains the 111-kilometer, 1,761-meter Galloway course
The official 111-kilometer race starts and finishes in Garries Park, climbs 1,761 meters, and spends more than 80 percent of the day on gravel through Galloway Forest Park. Repeated rises, rougher open tracks, and fast forest descents make line choice and fatigue-resistant handling part of the result.
Signature challenge: Carrying competitive climbing power into the late rough descents on a course that is short enough to race hard but long enough to expose poor fueling.

RIDERS REPORT
Opening 6K Climb
A brutal start with about 8 minutes at over 300 watts full gas. Features a descent with a sharp right-hand corner that catches riders out, followed by more climbing.
Sharp Left-Hand Corner
A technical corner after the opening climb where riders can easily hit rocks awkwardly and crash, even when being cautious.
The gravel roads drain really well - despite raining all night, surfaces were pretty much dry the next day.
Properly chunky gravel throughout much of the course - chunky enough that you can't ride through punctures with no pressure.

From the Field
The start of the race is basically like a 6K climb so I knew that first bit was going to be really really hard and it was really hard I think I was probably over like 300 watts for about eight minutes of like just full gas up the climb.

I think it's completely achievable for first time ultra riders, but then it's also demanding enough and has enough interest that I think it's going to be great for the very experienced of us. It's going to be fast. It's not going to be a multi-day ultra. It's going to be just a one long day.
Josh Reid · 11.3K views
It's 330 km and a time limit of 25 hours, but I reckon it's about a 12-13 hour for the fastest finishes. You can race it or you can have a nice time and take the full 25 hours.

This is a dark sky park. So if you're out here at night, you'll see the stars and there's no light pollution.

3 WORKOUTS BUILT FOR THIS RACE
Each workout below is selected from our archetype library based on The Gralloch’s specific demands. Click any workout to see the full execution protocol.
Gravel SpecificSurge and Settle
1hr+
Explosive surges into tempo settling — the signature gravel-specific workout.
The Gralloch's More than 80% gravel, Galloway Forest Park tracks forces constant power changes. Surge over the rough stuff, settle on the smooth, repeat for 69 miles.
EXECUTIONOut of the saddle for every surge — explosive, violent power. Then immediately drop to tempo and SETTLE. Smooth your breathing. Recover while still working. This is what gravel racing IS: attack the rock garden, settle on the straight, attack the climb, settle on the descent. Over and over.
POSITIONStanding for surges | Seated in drops for settle
RPESurges: 9–10 | Settle: 5–6
RACE-SPECIFIC: THE GRALLOCH
NUTRITION Target 40–60g carbs/hour for The Gralloch’s 69 miles. Front-load calories in the first half. One bottle per hour minimum, more in heat.
TERRAIN Highly technical terrain at The Gralloch demands practice on similar surfaces. Ride galloway forest park gravel at race-day cadence weekly. Expect: more than 80% gravel, galloway forest park tracks, repeated short climbs. Practice cornering, descending, and power delivery on unstable surfaces. Dial in tire pressure before race week — 5 PSI wrong costs you 15+ minutes over 69 miles.
Race SimulationBreakaway Simulation
1.5hr+
Attack, then hold — the tactical pattern that wins gravel races.
Race-pace efforts that mimic The Gralloch's demands. Pacing, fueling, and tactical decisions under fatigue. Practice the race before May.
EXECUTIONThis is race tactics on the trainer. Attack hard for 5 minutes — simulate bridging a gap or cresting a climb. Then immediately settle to tempo and HOLD. The transition from attack to hold is where races are lost. Practice it.
POSITIONOut of saddle for first 60s of attacks. Seated in drops for holds.
RPEAttacks: 8–9 | Holds: 6–7 | Recovery: 2–3

VO2maxDescending VO2 Pyramid
55min+
5-4-3-2-1 minute intervals at ascending power — a VO2 pyramid that gets shorter and harder.
5,778ft of climbing means repeated surges above threshold. VO2max work is how you survive the fifth climb, not just the first.
EXECUTIONEach interval gets shorter but HARDER. The 5-minute effort is controlled. The 1-minute finale is all-out. This pyramid teaches pacing discipline — start conservative, finish violent. Recovery between efforts equals the interval just completed.

RIDERS REPORT
Take nutrition you've eaten before - if you're out for 320 kilometers and eat something that's not your taste, that's not the greatest feeling. Take comfort food you like and eat often.
Feed stations are all self-service - you have to actually stop and pick stuff up, so factor this into your race strategy.
Tech boxes are positioned every 5 to 10K, but 5K is quite a long way to walk with a puncture on chunky gravel.
Mid-May in southwest Scotland can change the grip and exposure quickly, but one hot or wet historical edition is not evidence of an extreme race climate. A moderate score reflects that variability without inventing a forecast.[1]
How are the logistics for The Gralloch?
+
Gatehouse of Fleet is a rural destination that needs onward ground transport and early lodging, but the organizer provides an event campsite, mandatory off-site parking, and a detailed location guide. That is moderate planning rather than extreme remoteness.[3]
How adventurous is The Gralloch?
+
The route moves through Galloway Forest Park, lochs, forest tracks, and open plateaus while remaining a supported one-day race. It is memorable destination gravel, one step below a life-changing expedition.[4]
How prestigious is The Gralloch?
+
The official race offers age-group and Elite qualification pathways to the UCI Gravel World Championships and functions as Britain's flagship gravel event. That is national significance, short of an iconic global classic.[5]
Should I race The Gralloch?
+
Race it if you want a serious British qualifier where climbing, surface management, and positioning all matter. Train for a fast 111-kilometer race, not the separate 323-kilometer Ultra.
