Facts & History

Grew out of the Patagonia Lumber Company as a community gathering space; the race frames endurance racing as 'breaking through into the spirit world.' Field has grown from 125 riders (2019) to today's 250-rider cap, with organizers deliberately capping growth to keep it intimate. By Xander Alt & Heidi (Ault/Rentz), owners of the Patagonia Lumber Company.

Reputation: A borderlands cult classic — sells out in under nine minutes every January, prized as much for the sky-island scenery and weekend festival as for the racing.

Caroline Torey won the 2024 100-mile race at 3.5 months postpartum, in six hours flat
13-year-old Benji Kyrz won the 2024 30-mile race

Single-day race from Patagonia Lumber Company (~4,050ft; course 4,000-6,000ft — below altitude gate): Spirit World 100 = 101.8mi/6,392ft flagship, plus 83.3mi/5,210ft, 58mi/3,374ft, 30mi/1,795ft. HARD mid-course cutoff at mile 68 (6.5hr) on the 100 for border-proximity/daylight safety. Thu fundraiser dinner, Fri packet+group ride, Sat race, Sun recovery ride + awards. PRIOR PROFILE 100mi/3,500ft understated gain — corrected 2026-07-14 (official routes page).

Signature challenge: The hard mile-68 cutoff (6.5hr) — set by border-proximity and daylight safety, not difficulty — turns pacing into the whole exam.

Early Climbing
An early sustained climb out of Patagonia (riders cite roughly 17-18 miles) before a descent into the valley — sets the tone for the rolling day that follows.

The Cutoff
The hard 6.5-hour cutoff line — border-proximity and daylight safety set it, not course difficulty. Miss it and the race ends here.

Rolling San Rafael Valley grades continue into the closing miles before the finish at the Patagonia Lumber Company.
RIDERS REPORT
Ducane Pass climb MI 17.5
17 and a half mile line to the top of ducane pass, then you descend into low kill arizona. Within this stretch you see everything that you will then see across the entire course.
Deep sand pits
Deep sand pits where you're fishtailing and just holding on for dear life at 25 miles an hour on your gravel bike
Creek crossings
Creek crossings that splash you up in the face
Rocky shelves
You get rocky shelves throughout the course
Hot sun-exposed descents and steep long climbs with 7000 feet of climbing - you're going up and down and up and down and then down again and then up again
The ride was made quite a bit more difficult by the wind, with wind blowing from front wheel to rear wheel that was pretty stiff and pretty steady

From the Field

That last left turn really put me directly into this wind... it's blowing from my front wheel to my rear wheel and it's pretty stiff and pretty steady. This uphill slog into the wind made this pretty difficult ride quite a bit more difficult.

The 100 mile course starts out with a 17 and a half mile climb to the top of Duquesne Pass and then you descend into Lochiel Arizona. Within 7000 feet of climbing you're going up and down and up and down and then down again and then up again - it's a really incredible way to test yourself across a landscape that will give you an opportunity to really experience who you are not only as an athlete but as a human as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

2019 race day delivered 'spectacular' conditions with 'temps hovered in the high 70s and winds were not a factor,' following 'a record-breaking monsoon season this year yielded high grass and happy cows.' Late October timing in southern Arizona borderlands avoids summer heat but still requires desert race preparation for potential temperature swings and exposure. More weather exposure than Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego. "The Boomshakalaka Bar, the race's final aid station, sits near the base of the rocky outcropping."[2]

Course requires GPS upload since it's 'lightly marked'—race director Heidi Rentz warns riders 'if you make a wrong turn, you go to Mexico.' Medical support includes Sonoita-Elgin Fire District EMTs, and mechanical issues stay minimal with 2019 showing 'only a handful of punctures and one broken pedal.' The weekend format delivers extensive programming from Friday group rides to Sunday recovery rides. "A LIGHTLY MARKED COURSE - You are required to upload your course on a GPS to ensure that you do not miss a turn! Signage will be limited."[1]

The race tagline states 'You have 10 hours to ride your bike to the border of Mexico and back' through 'the most magical gravel road network.' Every distance 'brushes the border between Arizona and Mexico—those mountains lie beyond a wall that is visible from the course.' The Boomshakalaka Bar final aid station serves 'ice cold Coca-Cola' with views that inspired the name when Heidi Ault first saw them.[6]

Caroline Torey won the 2024 100-mile distance 'at 3.5 months postpartum in six hours flat,' while 13-year-old Benji Kyrz took the 30-mile victory. Elite winners like Matan Sopher (5:22:14) and Serena Gordon (6:01:01) show competitive depth, but the race explicitly prioritizes 'the spirit world' experience over racing prestige with its safety-first philosophy.[2]

If you can get an entry — it sells out in under nine minutes — yes. The sky-island terrain and Thursday-through-Sunday festival format make it worth the trip even though the field is regional.
