Editorial verdict
Kenya's UCI Gravel World Series qualifier — Hell's Gate altitude and equatorial heat, with zebra for company.[7]
Run by Team Amani / The Amani Project (the same organization behind the separate, 4-stage Migration Gravel Race in the Maasai Mara) from Sulmac Village on Lake Naivasha's south shore, through Hell's Gate National Park. Became Kenya's first UCI Gravel World Series qualifier. By Team Amani / The Amani Project.
Reputation: Kenya's inaugural UCI Gravel World Series event; growing reputation for genuine altitude/heat demands and guaranteed wildlife on course.

Team Amani's single-day UCI Gravel World Series qualifier from Sulmac Village on Lake Naivasha's south shore, adjacent to Hell's Gate National Park: 111km/2,500m (69mi/8,202ft) elite+age-band course, 60km/1,000m official course for men 60+/women 50+. ~85% gravel — red clay, singletrack, game trails — with guaranteed plains-game sightings (zebra, giraffe, warthog; Hell's Gate is one of the few parks cyclists enter unescorted). Course runs 1,675m-2,214m (5,495-7,264ft); start ~1,884m (6,181ft) = ALTITUDE RACE. Equatorial midday heat + altitude are the twin prep angles. Finish at Camp Carnelley's. Distinct from Migration Gravel Race (separate 4-stage Maasai Mara event, same organizers). PRIOR PROFILE 100mi/5,000ft wrong on both axes — corrected 2026-07-14.
Signature challenge: Equatorial midday heat stacked on Rift Valley altitude (5,495-7,264ft), across red clay, singletrack, and game trails through Hell's Gate National Park.
22
MILE
Kedong Ranch into Hell's Gate
Sand and sharp lava rock through Kedong Ranch (roughly km 6.5-35) before the course enters Hell's Gate National Park proper — the first real test of handling and tire choice.
37
MILE
Hell's Gate to Community Lands
Gravel and tarmac through the park's dramatic cliffs and zebra territory (roughly km 35-60 — also where the official 60km age-band course finishes), then out into community lands: dust, cattle on the road, kids cheering, and a genuinely nasty sandy climb.
59
MILE
Kingfisher Farm Return
The return via Kingfisher Farm (roughly km 60-95 onward) — heat and fatigue are both peaking by here, on the stretch back toward Camp Carnelley's.
RIDERS REPORT
Game Reserve Wildlife Crossings
Wild animals like zebras, impala, giraffe, and buffalo sometimes run across the road during the game reserve sections.
Steep Climbs with Technical Issues MI 60
Steep climbs that riders may have to walk parts of, especially if experiencing mechanical issues.
Descents with Hazards
Descents have pretty big holes, gullies and ruts, plus livestock on the road including cows.
The road is rough and bumpy terrain can dislodge cables from batteries on electronic shifting systems.
Course gets dusty as the race progresses, particularly around 30km into the race.
Expect every person, animal, motorbike and car to be on the wrong side of the road around every blind corner.

There is some pretty big holes gullies and ruts on the descents. The road is rough the altitude is high and it is going to be very hot - this morning has been quite cool but when we get up to the middle of the race the day will be very warm.

We had a 10-hour journey in the bus to get to Naivasha - it was a heinous journey but we got to see giraffes which was a bonus.

This is better than some of the UCI races in Europe - it's a proper setup with so many people here, it's so hopeful for the scene.

3 WORKOUTS BUILT FOR THIS RACE
Each workout below is selected from our archetype library based on Safari Gravel Race’s specific demands. Click any workout to see the full execution protocol.
DurabilityProgressive Fatigue
2hr+
Power targets INCREASE as duration goes on — reverse-pacing that builds race-finishing strength.
At mile 60 of 100, glycogen is gone. This workout teaches your body to produce watts on fumes.
EXECUTIONEach block is harder than the last. By the time you hit threshold, you’ve been riding for 80+ minutes. The final VO2 effort is the test — can you go HARD when everything says stop? This is how you win the last 20 miles of a gravel race.
NUTRITION Target 60–80g carbs/hour for Safari Gravel Race’s 100 miles. Start fueling within the first 30 minutes — early fueling prevents late-race collapse. Bonking at mile 60 is a nutrition failure, not a fitness failure.
ALTITUDE Moderate altitude at Safari Gravel Race. Arrive 2–3 days early. Reduce intensity expectations by 5–10%. Hydrate aggressively.
TERRAIN Mixed terrain at Safari Gravel Race requires surface adaptability. Include weekly rides on kenyan safari gravel to build confidence. Expect: kenyan safari, adventure gravel, regional event.
TT ThresholdSingle Sustained Threshold
1.25hr+
2×20min at threshold — the ultimate FTP builder.
50ft/mi means long efforts at or near FTP on every climb. If your threshold cracks at minute 15, you'll walk the rest.
EXECUTIONLock in your power. Don't start too hard — the first 5 minutes should feel almost easy. Build into it. At minute 15, you'll want to quit. That's where the adaptation happens. Breathing should be heavy but controlled.
POWERIntervals: 95–100% FTP | Recovery: 55% FTP
CADENCE85–95rpm seated — constant, metronomic
POSITIONPrimary: seated on hoods. Switch to drops at minute 10 for aero practice.

Gravel SpecificSurge and Settle
1hr+
Explosive surges into tempo settling — the signature gravel-specific workout.
Safari Gravel Race's Kenyan safari, Adventure gravel forces constant power changes. Surge over the rough stuff, settle on the smooth, repeat for 100 miles.
EXECUTIONOut of the saddle for every surge — explosive, violent power. Then immediately drop to tempo and SETTLE. Smooth your breathing. Recover while still working. This is what gravel racing IS: attack the rock garden, settle on the straight, attack the climb, settle on the descent. Over and over.

RIDERS REPORT
Drink as often as you can - it gets very hot by mid-race and you're at altitude. If you run out of water and there's no water stops, there are little shops on the course.
Morning starts cool but gets very warm during the middle of the race.
If you expect there to be a car going the wrong way around every blind corner, you will be okay.
The feed station serves delicious, sweet watermelon that you don't get in the UK.
Fast center, grippy edges. The modern all-rounder benchmark.

Historical weather data shows average highs of 95°F and lows of 75°F, with a 1% chance of rain on any given day. 2025 conditions were described as "dry and dusty environment" with heat as a significant challenge factor. The 2024 edition saw "brutally sandy" first-half terrain that drained rider energy early, suggesting variable year-to-year conditions. More weather exposure than Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego.[1]
How are the logistics for Safari Gravel Race?
+
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport plus 2-hour drive to Naivasha. "a lifelong dream" experience, but basic operational details remain missing - no packet pickup info, parking details, or race-day logistics published.[1]
How adventurous is Safari Gravel Race?
+
Wildlife encounters are guaranteed - "A dazzle of zebras thundered across the course early in the day" with giraffes, lions, eagles, antelopes and baboons throughout. The route passes Pride Rock from The Lion King and active geothermal powerplant plumes.[6]
How prestigious is Safari Gravel Race?
+
UCI Gravel World Series qualifier status brings legitimacy, with Hans Becking and Maddy Nutt winning elite titles. Hailey Hunter Smith's 2025 victory drew international coverage, but the race hasn't yet established deep competitive history or household-name recognition.[4]
