RIDERS REPORT
Ishpeming section
A lot of hike-a-bike especially towards the end as you get into Ishpeming later in the race.
Mental game deterioration
The first thing to go for most will be the mental. When you get 6-10 hours in and you're dealing with rocks and roots while climbing and descending, it just wears on your mental game.
85 to 90% of the race is single track with rocks, roots, jump lines, and constant hills. There's no free trail out there - even down the hills you have to stay completely focused.
You can't see where you're going - everything comes in 100 foot spurts. You can't get into any kind of rhythm, challenges just keep coming at you one after the other.
100 miles of bone-jarring, skin ripping, brutal unforgiving mining country trails that zigzag through the rugged Upper Peninsula landscape.

From the Field

I think the way the Marji is different from say Leadville is that you can't see where you're going everything comes in 100 foot spurts you can't get into any kind of rhythm it's just they just keep coming at you one after the other.

When you get 10 hours in when you get 6 hours in and you're dealing with these rocks and these roots and you're climbing and you're descending and it's still rocks and roots it just wears on your mental game.

There are no official race aid stations. We do have what we call Trail Angels out there providing aid, but there's not much Gatorade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Historical weather data shows average highs of 68°F and lows of 52°F, with a 44% chance of rain on any given day. September in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a weather gamble where you might get perfect fall conditions or early winter misery. The race philosophy of 'you're on your own' extends to weather preparedness - no bail-out options when conditions turn ugly. Bears are apparently common enough to knock down course signs, adding wildlife management to your weather concerns. More weather exposure than Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego.[7]

Getting to Ishpeming, Michigan remains a trek, and Carl Jarema notes "Everything about this race is weird and unconventional! Registration sells out in minutes, there is not waitlist, and the intentional misinformation, confusion, and tom foolery from the race organizers and fellow participants is nonstop to race day." First-come-first-serve camping at Marji Camp creates additional chaos for the 650+ riders.[1]

The 906 Adventure Team's "we are not here to help you" philosophy creates stakes where GPS skills matter more than watts. Riders must collect tokens from plastic pumpkin buckets to prove course completion, with fake empty buckets adding confusion. Andrea Larson encountered "a rider lying in the middle of the non-technical snowmobile trail with a broken collarbone."[6]

Jeremiah Bishop calling it 'THE HARDEST SINGLE-DAY MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE IN AMERICA' carries weight, but it's still a regional Michigan affair. Registration sells out in under a minute, which sounds impressive until you realize they cap the 100-mile field at just 70 riders. It's got cult status among masochists, but the gravel world barely knows it exists.[3]

If you want a 100-mile technical endurance challenge in wilderness—yes, it's a legitimate test. If you want accessibility or pro field depth—look elsewhere.
