RIDERS REPORT
Chadago Canyon
Beautiful red rock canyons with challenging terrain that riders encounter during the descent portion of the course.
High Altitude Start
Race starts at 8,500 feet elevation, requiring altitude acclimatization. Riders report feeling effects of altitude even at moderate elevations during pre-rides.
The pumice is light and airy and it moves away from your tires - a whole new learning experience that's completely unique because of all the old volcanic activity. You're not going to find it anywhere else so you gotta learn how to ride it specifically.
Course features sand, descents, and chunky stuff that can be fatiguing and uncomfortable on aggressive bike setups.
White pacey sand at elevation that doesn't come off as too soft, making trails playful rather than difficult.

From the Field

We start at 8,500 feet and descend down to this area where we are now. Chadago Canyon, which is where we are, these beautiful red rock canyons. You put on your best guess for tires, fill up your bottles, give it a crack, and see how it goes.

It was like asphalt and then there'd be like sand pits you drop off the asphalt into the sand and the rocks and up The Ledges and it's like good fun. It's like old mountain biking days without suspension. You're pedaling going downhill so we're working.

This is my favorite event not just because the riding is fantastic but just kind of the community around here the village is fantastic and everything is here to do and you run into people all over the place here at the same time you've got plenty of time to go out and about in so much gorgeous Majesty just nearby.

I'm excited for everybody that is coming for their first gravel event so I'm hoping people walk away with a true experience of what it means to go out into the middle of nowhere have a fun adventure come back and just celebrate that with a bunch of people who did the same thing that you did.

RIDERS REPORT
You want to ride it in your endurance pace, like five to six all day and save those efforts that are a little above it because eight might be kind of at your limiter's threshold. Respect the altitude, drink extra, stay hydrated.
Smart plan is to make this a destination weekend not just to acclimate to the elevation but for all the activities as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Historical weather data shows average highs of 69°F and lows of 42°F, with a 29% chance of rain on any given day. September brings dramatic temperature swings from cold morning starts to valley heat. Amanda Nauman warns: "The overnight lows start to dip in September, so prepare to be cold in the early morning and heat up throughout the day." High altitude amplifies sun exposure with thinner atmosphere increasing sunburn and dehydration risks throughout the ride. More weather exposure than Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego.[4]

Central Village location under the gondola provides clear start/finish logistics with resort amenities nearby. Friday expo and Saturday morning pickup windows show organized packet distribution. Missing details on parking and airport access suggest either smooth operations or gaps in planning communication. "What makes Mammoth Tuff deceivingly difficult is its unique set of challenges: the starting altitude of 8,000 feet, long stretches of sandy and loose terrain, and the near absence of course markings."[3]

Racing through Long Valley Caldera formed 760,000 years ago on volcanic stone gravel delivers proper wilderness experience. The course features diverse volcanic rock from pumice to obsidian across the Eastern Sierra backdrop. Dave Malwitz captured the setting: "The event perfectly captures the magic of this surreal landscape, where each ride was a memorable encounter with the extraordinary."[1]

UCI Gravel World Series qualifier with top 3 per category and top 25% of Elite earning Worlds spots. The 511-rider field in 2025 included serious competition with Caleb Botcher winning the 89-mile course in 4:27:35. "an iconic West Coast gravel event" though it lacks the household name recognition of established classics.[3]

Show up fit or the 8,000-foot starting elevation will expose every training shortcut you took. The 7,500 feet of climbing over 89 miles isn't negotiable, and volcanic gravel punishes both your legs and your equipment. This isn't a scenic tour—it's a legitimate training ground that's produced Unbound winners for a reason.
