RIDERS REPORT
Different surfaces are really awesome for climbing, some are really not. Often you're trying to avoid stuff where your tire is just gonna struggle and you're gonna spin out.

From the Field

Think about your bike and your body as two separate entities - you are in a dance with your bike. Sometimes you let your bike lead, sometimes you lead. The more you try to exert control over your bike, the more things will go poorly.

I have stuff in my bike wallet so it's with me all the time no matter what ride I'm on, and then I have specific stuff in each bike's saddlebag - lever, tire, co2, chuck, pump, patch kit, multi-tool, valve core tool, and Dyna plugs.

RIDERS REPORT
Victoria Mezcal tires are absolute favorites - they have a really consistent center tire tread pattern so you're not dealing with crazy lugs that slow you down when riding road mixed with hard pack and some loose stuff.
Pick a tire that's pretty wide but has a pretty smooth center section and then a little bit of knob on the side when you ride a lot of road mixed with hard pack and some loose stuff.
For tire pressure, look at your tire manufacturer's website - many have tables where you can see what tire pressure to start with depending on your tire width and weight, then experiment by changing one or two psi at a time.

RIDERS REPORT
You want to be sure that you are on top of hydration and nutrition, putting in 250 to 300 calories per hour for long gravel events.
Get your braking done or most of your breaking down before you hit the corner - enter slow, exit fast, then pedal pedal pedal out of that corner fast to maintain much more speed overall.
On steep climbs, scoot your whole body forward on your bike and perch above your hoods to bring your weight forward, because one of the biggest reasons you'll have to bail is your front wheel starts waggling.
Keep your weight back on descents so you can adjust to anything, and grab front and rear brakes evenly - avoid grabbing a lot of rear brake as your rear end starts to fishtail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Historical weather data shows average highs of 78°F and lows of 58°F, with a 52% chance of rain on any given day. Late May through mid-June timing provides a two-plus week window to dodge bad weather entirely. The self-supported format means you control when to ride, avoiding weather-related mechanical challenges during fixed-date events. Smart scheduling for Wisconsin's variable spring conditions with complete flexibility to pick favorable days. Similar climate challenges to SBT GRVL.[13]

Start and finish at Mountain-Bay Trailhead with parking at the Marathon County landfill location. No packet pickup—just show up anytime during the two-week window with a Wisconsin state trail pass (waived first weekend in June). One rider notes it's "easy to follow a nice mix of trails and roads," though the self-supported format means downloading GPS files and cue sheets beforehand.[6]

The self-supported aspect adds independence on unmarked routes through "forested gravel roads" with opportunities for solitude. One rider enjoyed "beautiful scenery" including historic train depot in Eland and multiple railroad trestles. Adventure quotient stays modest on shared-use corridors never far from Highway 29 and civilization.[1]

This is literally a free, self-supported ride where you show up whenever you want during the window. Shane Hitz designed it as "perfect for someone new to gravel riding," with results self-reported to Facebook for prize drawings. It's positioned as an intro event to get people into gravel—which defines its place in the hierarchy.[3]

If you're local to Wisconsin—yes, it's good value. If you're traveling—skip it.
