RIDERS REPORT
Early hills
Pretty hilly early on with a spicy start straight onto the rough stuff after neutralized section ends
First three kilometers
Neutralized section before getting into the challenging terrain
The gravel is a bit rougher and more technical than some other European races, but still quite nice and flowy rather than super technical
Race goes straight onto the rough stuff after the neutralized section with immediate challenging terrain

From the Field

I'm 150 km into a 200 km gravel epic. My legs are screaming. My lungs are screaming. But I'm in the front of the race.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rob Weaver experienced typical April conditions: "At about the halfway point, around 2 hours 30 minutes in, the wind got up and it rained quite heavily." Northumberland's unpredictable spring weather can shift from dust clouds to heavy rain mid-race, with temperatures that require layering strategies. Riders face everything from mud to potential snow in this changeable climate.[9]

Rob Weaver captures the mass start chaos: "riding in a bunch on a slippery, unpredictable surface at speed with a bunch of strangers is, at times, terrifying." Entries sell out within hours for the UK's biggest gravel race, capped at 2,000 riders. The remote Kielder Forest location requires driving, with limited local accommodation forcing most riders to camp or commute 30+ miles from Hexham.[2]

Nearly 100% off-road through Britain's largest forest creates isolation where self-reliance matters. The April timing as riders "crawl out of their winter reverie" for their first major test. The remote Kielder setting, unpredictable weather, and mandatory survival kit requirements create adventure elements where equipment choices and pacing decisions have real consequences.[3]

This is the UK's flagship gravel event, with 2,000 riders fighting for entry slots that sell out within hours of opening. Called "the UK's answer to Unbound" by cycling media, it defines the British gravel scene. The mass start energy and sheer scale make it the bucket-list event for UK gravel riders, establishing it as the premier challenge in Britain.[3]

Yes, if British gravel interests you. Dirty Reiver is non-negotiable for UK gravel credibility. Just be ready for the registration sprint, the weather roulette, and the technical terrain that separates prepared riders from hopeful ones.
