From the Field

The sand between checkpoint 2 and 3 was brutal! I went down on the sand section maybe a dozen times. We were 2-3 hours ahead of schedule before the 3rd section! We lost all the gains on that section.

This is excessively boring, straight, nice temple. 11 miles till the next turn. It is glorious.

The relay option seemed like a good opportunity for my wife to ride her first Century ever and give me a solid training ride. The race is split into four legs, each roughly 50 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Historical weather data shows average highs of 81°F and lows of 59°F, with a 44% chance of rain on any given day. Matt Acker warns "weather in Michigan is largely a question mark in the spring months. We've been known to be graced with 80 degrees and sunshine but also 35 degrees and freezing rain." Sarah Porch experienced this volatility when temperatures "escalated" beyond the predicted low 80s, creating unexpected heat and humidity challenges. More weather exposure than Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego.[5]

Point-to-point from Au Gres Marina at 6:00 AM to Ludington requires vehicle shuttling or crew coordination. Race organizers offer optional Breakthrough T1D crew support for those without personal support. As Jackie Gregory discovered during navigation issues in the forest sections, GPS failure combined with limited course marking can create problems when "you could barely see anything, but trees on each side of you."[3]

Touching your tire to Lake Huron at sunrise, then racing 204 miles to Lake Michigan creates geographic adventure most races can't match. Selene Yeager captured the journey's evolution: "Manistee National Forest is where wood fairies come from... Everywhere I looked as we dove through snowmobile tracks beneath heavy canopy was crisp, green ground cover speckled with tiny white flowers."[2]

Selene Yeager's Bicycling.com coverage of the inaugural event brought national attention with 300 starters, but the race hasn't developed significant pro field presence. The unique lake-to-lake concept provides geographic prestige, yet lacks the competitive depth or prize money that draws elite fields to headline gravel events.[6]

If you're in Michigan or the Midwest and want an ultra-distance challenge—yes, it's a well-organized event with unique appeal. If you're traveling from far away—there are more prestigious ultra-distance events elsewhere.
