The first Boulder Roubaix took place in 1992, inspired by the legendary Paris-Roubaix classic. Organizer Chris Grealish of Denver-Boulder Couriers — who later co-founded the CrossVegas UCI World Cup cyclocross event — built the race on the dirt roads north of Boulder as a spring rite of passage for Colorado cyclists. The biennial format (every other year) was established early, creating scarcity that enhanced the event's mystique. The 30th anniversary edition was held in 2022. For 2026, the course moves to a new start/finish at Boulder Reservoir with a longer 30-mile loop. Founded in 1992. By Chris Grealish / DBC Events (Denver-Boulder Couriers).

The Course

Rolling mixed-surface through North Boulder County agricultural landscape. The 2026 course is a new 30-mile (48 km) loop — 61% unpaved, 39% paved — that starts and finishes at Boulder Reservoir. The terrain is constant undulation through working farm and county roads that can be anywhere from smooth to extremely rutted depending on weather. No single dramatic climb, but the accumulated rolling and the wind across open terrain create a war of attrition. The finishing stretch along the Boulder Feeder Canal and across the reservoir dams adds a challenging technical element to the final miles.

Signature challenge: The wind. Not the terrain, not the climbing, not the distance — the wind across open North Boulder County farmland is what defines Boulder Roubaix. In 2024, it shut down the race. On any given edition, it determines whether the dirt roads are fast-rolling or soul-crushing. Combined with the unpredictable surface conditions and spring weather variability, the wind transforms a rolling 30-mile circuit into a legitimate test of tactical racing and survival.

Rolling out from the reservoir into North Boulder County. The field is together, the adrenaline is high, and the first surface transition from pavement to dirt separates the prepared from the hopeful. Tire choice is locked in. If recent weather was wet, the opening dirt sectors reveal conditions immediately.

Deep into the unpaved roads north toward Hygiene. Rolling terrain on roads that range from smooth to brutal washboard. The wind picks up across open farmland with no shelter. Groups form and shatter based on surface conditions. Mechanical attrition begins here — bottles ejected, riders changing flats on the roadside.

The Return
Turning south back toward Boulder Reservoir. If the wind has been in your face heading north, you get relief here — or the opposite. The dirt roads continue with winding curves and enough elevation change to wear down tired legs. The paved sections offer brief respite before the next dirt sector.

The new 2026 finishing stretch along the Boulder Feeder Canal and across the reservoir dams. A challenging final few miles on tired legs with technical features that reward the rider who has saved something for the end. This is where the race is decided.

Denver International Airport (DEN) — 45 minutes to Boulder. Major hub with direct flights from most US cities.
Lodging
Boulder has abundant hotels and vacation rentals ($150-350/night). Longmont (15 min north) and Louisville/Superior (15 min south) offer more affordable options. Book early — late April is pleasant weather season in Boulder and accommodations fill. Boulder Reservoir is between Boulder and Longmont, so lodging in either town works.
Food
Boulder has an exceptional restaurant and cafe scene. Pre-race carb loading is easy. Race morning, bring your own breakfast — no on-site food vendors confirmed. Post-race, Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder has dozens of options.
